Context

Kontent.ai is a headless CMS full of pages and modular content blocks (e.g. testimonial, X post, etc.). Our largest customers have thousands or even millions of these blocks in their project inventories. This content could be categorized in various ways and it could be viewed in a customizable and sortable table. The table can be filtered by the search field and by filter panel on the left.

Problem

Over the years, we added several new columns for users to see and sort by. A lot of customers, especially the large ones, however, need to use most of these columns (so the option to hide some of them doesn’t help).

From our data I know that around 10% of accesses are from the iPad alone. Also, a significant number of our users use the app side by side and it’s even recommended by our documentation for some use-cases.

We've already run out of low hanging fruits for the table itself so there wasn’t much to be improved further.

As you can see the filter panel (left) takes significant screen estate.

We also have large amount of feedback in ProductBoard on shortened content in the table (and related issues).

“Depending on the screen size, sometimes content item names or content type names are longer than the column they’re in."

Goal

Significantly improve the space to see content (in content inventory).

Success criteria

Users will be able to successfully locate and identify the new expandable filters in the interface.

The introduction of new (expandable) filters will maintain or improve the efficiency and accuracy of user selection of desired content (within a specific category in the inventory).

I aimed to avoid collecting data merely to quantify something, so I chose not to set KPIs such as 'reduce the time to locate content by X%' in this case.

Process

I worked on the problem definition and a goal closely with PM.

Once started with finding the solution, I brainstormed several possible ideas.
